Cultivating a Love for Reading

At the Deutsche Schule der Borromäerinnen Alexandria, we place particular importance on strengthening the reading skills of our students as a foundation for academic success and lifelong learning. Through a variety of initiatives, our girls are encouraged to explore literature in both German and Arabic, fostering not only language competence but also cultural awareness and critical thinking. Reading activities, book projects, and library programs are designed to inspire curiosity and imagination while supporting each student’s individual development. By nurturing a love for reading, the school seeks to empower its students with the tools of knowledge, expression, and creativity.
To further enhance this culture of reading, the school provides two dedicated libraries: the Primary Library, which serves students up to Grade 7, and the Upper Library, designed for students from Grade 8 to Grade 12. Each library is tailored to meet the needs and interests of its age group, ensuring that our students have access to a wide range of resources that accompany them throughout their school journey. By nurturing a love for reading, the school seeks to empower its students with the tools of knowledge, expression, and creativity.

Reading Competitions in German and Arabic

Reading Competitions in German and Arabic

At the Deutsche Schule der Borromäerinnen Alexandria, we are deeply committed to fostering a love of reading and strengthening literacy in both German and Arabic, the two cultural pillars of our school. Each year, our students actively participate in two regional reading competitions organized among the international German schools in Egypt — one held in German and the other in Arabic. Students in Grades 5 and 6 are encouraged to engage with novels in both languages as preparation for the competitions.
This not only enhances their linguistic proficiency but also broadens their cultural horizons and deepens their appreciation for literature. The winners from each grade proudly advance to the next stage in Cairo, where they represent our school and compete with students from other German schools across the country. Upon their return, the successful participants are honored and celebrated by the school community, acknowledging both their achievement and their dedication to the joy of reading.

Primary School Library

Many girls are happy about the reading promotion hours in the library. Reading books is fun and during the breaks, when borrowing books, it sometimes gets really crowded. The library is a nice place for a short break for reading and a good opportunity to get to know the German language in many facets.

We would like to support our students' love of reading with the following activities:

  • Network Book-Audio Version-Literary Adaptation: The library and children's cinema work together in the Selection of books and films.
  • Project Reading Time: Native speakers read aloud.
  • Holiday time is also reading time, we would like to inform you about Antolin. At Antolin, the girls will find book recommendations, information about books and questions about collecting points.
  • All students from grade 3 onwards have a personal password. The passwords can be requested from us
