Ratification of the New Mission Statement of the DSBA –
An Important Step for the Future of Our School Community
On 5 December 2025, an important milestone was reached at the Christmas Bazaar of the
German School of the Borromean Sisters in Alexandria: the school sponsor, the parents’ council,
the teaching staff, and the student council officially signed the new DSBA mission statement in a
ceremonial act.
The mission statement describes the shared values, goals, and attitudes that shape life at our
school. It serves as guidance for all members of our school community and forms the binding
framework for educational practice, school development, and future projects.
At the request of the school sponsor—the Sisters of the Order of St. Charles Borromeo in
Germany—the mission statement was developed in close alignment with the mission statement
of the Borromean Sisters’ school in Cairo. The preamble is identical at both locations, ensuring a
common structure, a shared foundation, and a unified direction.
The development process took place in close cooperation with a broadly composed working
group consisting of parents, students, teachers, and members of the school committee. After
several feedback rounds and intensive consultations, a mission statement is now in place that
reflects the expectations and wishes of all those involved.
Based on this mission statement, the school program and future projects will be further
developed and aligned as part of a continuous process toward a strong, clearly profiled, and
future-ready school.
We are proud to have successfully completed this important process.

Mission & Vision

Preamble The German Schools of the Borromean Sisters in Cairo and Alexandria are part of the cultural and educational policy of the Federal Foreign Office of the Federal Republic of Germany. As “encounter schools,” they lead to bicultural school-leaving qualifications. Their work is rooted in the tradition of the Borromean Sisters, whose mission extends to all people regardless of person, origin, or religion. In this spirit, the German School of the Borromean Sisters Alexandria (DSBA) has adopted the following mission statement:

Icon
I. Values and Community

We—the Sisters, educators, teachers, students, staff, and school leadership of DSBA—create an appreciative, respectful, and trusting environment. Mutual support, empathy, and openness shape everyday school life. Together, we live fundamental values such as charity and its active implementation within the school and beyond. Our students develop a strong awareness of social responsibility and the development of their personal talents.

II. Encounter and Intercultural Identity

The German School of the Borromean Sisters Alexandria is an encounter school that brings together cultures, languages, and religions. Internal and external dialogue strengthens understanding, respect, and interreligious tolerance, and enables our students to help shape local and international developments with an open mind, critical thinking, and intercultural competence.

III. Responsibility

We support our students in their personal and academic development by strengthening them in analytical thinking, constructive reflection, and the formation of democratic values. We encourage them to take responsibility for themselves and their environment. A conscious and respectful approach to people and resources, as well as sustainability, guides our actions.

IV. Empowerment of Girls and Women

At the German School of the Borromean Sisters in Alexandria, students develop self-responsibility. The school encourages them to engage actively in school, family, professional life, society, and politics, and supports their development into confident individuals.

V. Education

German as the language of instruction and school life, Arabic as the mother tongue, multilingual communication, and the Abitur form the academic foundation of our education. Our educational model is based on a modern, student-centered pedagogy that awakens and promotes individual strengths. We create a structured learning environment in which personal responsibility and a constructive feedback culture are practiced as part of continuous improvement. Through curricular and extracurricular activities, we promote critical thinking, creativity, ethical action, and up-to-date digital skills. Our students place particular value on the ability to face challenges proactively and to engage with media and opinions in a thoughtful and differentiated manner. Alongside academic excellence, personal development is a central focus: empathy, resilience, and self-reflection are key competencies for the best possible preparation for the future.

VI. Cooperation

In an open and constructive dialogue, Sisters, educators, teachers, students, staff, parents, and the school leadership shape school life together in order to create a sustainable foundation for future-oriented development.
