On June 7, 2026, several international schools in Cairo took part in the Cairo Climate Talks / climate dialogues organized by the German Embassy. As part of this competition, the following schools competed against each other:
• NDSA
• ESK
• DSBA
• Rahn School
• Lycée français du Caire (with two groups)
This project is already being implemented at numerous schools worldwide and is being further developed in cooperation with the French Embassy.
From game to project
In advance, the participating students were given a game-based task format at their schools. These playful impulses then developed into concrete project ideas on climate action and sustainability.
DSBA project: Recycling for less plastic
DSBA was represented by the students:
• Malak Akram
• Nada Elhfnawy
• Chantal Girard
(all from Grade 9)
.
The three students presented a compelling project to reduce plastic waste in Egypt, in particular by reducing single-use plastic drinking-water bottles. Their idea proposes introducing a sustainable recycling and avoidance system that can be established in the long term at schools and in everyday life.
With their commitment and creative implementation, they achieved an excellent 2nd place for DSBA.
1st place went to ESK, whose contribution focused on the concrete work of an in-school climate club. A particular focus was on practical action to keep beaches and environmental areas clean.
Awards ceremony
The awards ceremony took place after the competition in a festive setting. The awards were presented by the Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany, Mr. Jürgen Schulz.
The jury consisted of:
• Mr. Jürgen Schulz (German Embassy Cairo)
• Maryline Olszak (French Embassy)
• Esra Aburehab (Project Coordinator for Egypt)
The 2nd place was awarded prize money of €500.
Recognition and thanks
DSBA warmly congratulates its students on this outstanding success. Their commitment impressively demonstrates how important creative ideas and initiative are for climate action. Special thanks go to the organizers at the German Embassy as well as to all
DSBA teachers who supervised and supported this project in the lower and middle school sections.
Participation was an important contribution to raising awareness of environmental and climate issues, within the school and beyond.
